FAQ: Answers To Your Questions
The short answer is ‘no’ … but that’s because we have a process that handles the difficult stuff for you behind the scenes.
If you try doing it yourself, it’s certainly not like buying a vehicle on eBay or from a local dealer. There are a lot more things that you need in place, and you need to know your way around a lot more government rules, laws, and regulations to make it work. Get any of these wrong, and you really could lose all your money and your vehicle, as well as be hit with government penalties.
Our team has a total of multiple decades of experience importing literally multiple thousands of vehicles from the US. At various times, members of our team have held Registered Importer (DOT) and Independent Commercial Importer (EPA) licenses, as well as having current licenses to import all brands of modern Japanese mini trucks. All this to say that you are in good hands.
Really, all you have to do is to choose the vehicle you want, pay (in dollars to our business within the US), sign some simple paperwork so we can handle the import on your behalf, and arrange trucking from the port to your location with our recommended trucking provider.
In fact, we think you’ll be surprised at how easy it is.
It depends. If you’ve bought a vehicle that’s over 25 years old, then there should be no barriers to you getting it registered in the US. (Do check with your local DMV about your state’s requirements first, of course.)
If you buy one of our newer or brand-new Japanese mini trucks, then the answer is slightly more complicated. You see, unlike the 25-year-old vehicles, the federal government does have rules about these mini trucks. They can be imported for off-road use only. They are also limited to a maximum 20 MPH. As a result, you cannot register them for use on the road. You can title them, but only as off-road vehicles.
When you buy a vehicle from us, we will provide you with all the documents (including translations) that are appropriate for that vehicle type.
The first thing to keep in mind is that this isn’t the same as ordering a new pair of earbuds from Amazon. Transporting a vehicle across the world is a much bigger undertaking.
Remember, all the vehicles you see in our inventory are already sitting in the yard ready to ship out. So the first thing we have to do is to book your vehicle on a ship. Now, with the shipping lines we use, there are multiple ships leaving for the US every month. Having said that, they’re not like buses, leaving every day, or something like that. Plus, you can’t just get a vehicle on a ship leaving in a day or two, because it first has to go through the processing and customs procedures for leaving Japan. Your vehicle could leave in as little as 10 days, or as long as 4 weeks, depending on availability of spaces and the timing of ships.
Next is the ocean voyage. Transit to the west coast is under 3 weeks, but to the north east, it can be almost 40 days. Once it has arrived, your vehicle then has to pass through US customs at the port. This also takes a matter of a few days to a week.
Finally, arranging a truck to pick it up and bring it to you can take anything from a few days to a week, with a few more days on the road until it finally arrives at your address.
Although we won’t be giving you moment-by-moment updates of the exact latitude and longitude of your vehicle, we will keep you updated as to which stage it is in, and when it’s expected to get to the next one.
For example: “Your car is now booked on the Anastasia Ace 134, leaving Japan on March 7th, and arriving at the US port on April 26th.”
